The Creative City – Hamilton Creative Identity Strategy a Waste of Time and Money…?

I read Hamiltons Creativity and Identity Strategy, and without sounding like a book review I found it hard going and full of what I would call sales or fancy talk and then when I clicked on “Want to find out more link” at the end I got a message saying “The page you are looking for has moved or no longer exists.” so I presume with the changes in council representatives since 2010 when this was written that this strategy are no more… I subsequently did search the council site and found the document but apart from a brief mention is some committee minutes about the temporary disruption events can have and the potential mess left behind there was no mention or updates on projects, etc. Considering the money probably spent on this and getting the internationally renowned creative thinker Charles Landry over to “engage” on this it all seems a bit superficial  and an expensive waste of time.

Charles Landry according to his website quote “is an international authority on the use of imagination and creativity in urban change. He invented the concept of the Creative City in the late 1980’s.” unquote. Again it all sounds like interesting stuff but apart from this one document there is no evidence of anything else happening, pity because if Hamilton was quote “striving to be a city that introduces and explains itself – communicating in a way that demonstrates layers of depth, where the intent is grasped instantly” unquote – whatever that means it seems the current council either disagrees or can’t understand (like me) what it all means, apart from having a lot of events in Hamilton.

In summary I think the Creative City as per Florida and Landry is a great concept apart from these two being paid a lot to talk or “engage” and write books about this the hard work is transferring these ideals into action and then of course waiting to see if it actually makes any difference.

Note: According to Event Finda apparently Palmerston North was “indexed against 14 other similar sized international cities” by Charles Landry and there is a report on idealog about this with Palmerston North coming 8th out of 17 comparable cities on his creative city index.

Okay now we are indexed what happens next…?

Footnote: During my investigation I came across TED Ideas worth spreading: which is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks and found the talk Do Schools Kill Creativity? by Sir Ken Robinson fascinating and somewhat reassuring at the same time and certainly got more value than Florida and Landry because I could directly relate to the context.

The Creative City – Ode to Florida

Ode to Florida, that is Richard Florida

It started with some economic sense

It ended in a book some say is all for the cents

T for TECHNOLOGY with logic in base 2

There are many ways to the string variable “do”

T for TALENT your kind of weird

As your words and actions we don’t know and fear

T for TOLERANCE of the open kind

Although real life often just wants to work blind

We now come to the PLACE

Or is it the end I don’t want to face

Anyway what ever PLACE suits your mind

I hope it exists and the weather is kind

The Rise of the Creative Class made him a star

And the critics clamored from near and a far

But creative we do and imagine it might be

The future is waiting then pass and set in the sea

Change to our city is what needed

But how many have really succeeded

And the change required is like the lyric of a song

“transformation from post-manufacturing ugly duckling to a gay-friendly, hipster swan”*

Don’t follow the work we are fed

Move the jobs to the people instead

So Florida we have listened to your will

And we finish by paying the $35,000 bill

*Note Quote from The Ruse of the Creative Class

The Creative City – Trailer

Imagine a city infested with implied dynamic thinkers, creators and implementers, some searching for ideas, some for inspiration and others for a pencil.  Can you picture casual attire and flexible working hours simmering within  crafted shadows and inspiration lurking under each Foosball table. Could you believe a place where invention is weaved into the raw fabric of its creation and is then mixed with open plan offices to bring you a brotherhood  of creatives and all this via the latest multi-audio-graphic-violators ever devised…

Be warned, as this is CREATIVE CITY and is being nurtured, attracted and sustained in a place near YOU!

The Creative Class and Creative Industries Policy – The Creatous Klausser Interview

INTERVIEWER – Hello, today on Future Klausser I would like to introduce you to my guest Creatous Klausser the apparent successor to Industrious Klausser. Creatous Klausser, I believe your emergence really became apparent in the early 2000s…

CREATOUS KLAUSSER- Please call me Creato. Yes we seem to have got a lot more attention in the early 2000s but have really been round for centuries.

INTERVIEWER – You have your critics with some almost denying your existence…

CREATO – Critics, hmm, I think the definition of Cretous Klausser is the problem, and trying to pigeon hole it is difficult and we do exist otherwise it would not be possible for you to talk about me.

INTERVIEWER – Okay then, how could someone recognise that they are Creato?

CREATO – Creato has certain common values and characteristics but why dwell on the classification, as I think it is better to feed the Creato than starve it with doubt.

INTERVIEWER – But Industrious Klausser has been well feed for a long time and it seems to be fading…

CREATO – Ahh yes, and so was its predecessor Agrarious Klausser well fed, society changes and change is difficult, but necessary for both the survival and demise of the species. In fact change is the reason why I believe the species has been able to survive thus far…

INTERVIEWER – How do we feed Creato?

CREATO – Early recognition, fast action, acceptance, policy, not many rules and boundaries, a nice place to live/work and most important much more Creatous than Klausser.

Creative Class and Creative Industries Policy – Rid Those Creative Class Blues

I say to you did we really learn anything from the Creative Class Conflicts of the mid 2000s? The waste of human and humanoid thought endeavor is a blight on our history, the Great Creative Scourges of the 2080s a curse on all who just watched it happen conserving their imagination whilst others opened their minds only to be copy coded and enslaved in temporal gameloft camps. So where does it leave us now that the originality stocks are almost depleted and duplicity is running rife through the Europe zone…? Well my friends I have the answer in a new wonder treatment  called PLAGIASTISM PLUS  and with just a small dose of pirate-theftis taken at each time lapse you will rid yourself of all creative class blues without the need to leave your comfort gome and never  again have to venture through the entrapment zone treatment and YES if you place a credit within the next time cycle you will get a 10 bonus insti-art* credits!!!

*insti-art credits are valid for 30 time lapse and can only be used at an authorised creative-r-us vendor.

The Business of Creativity – Gameloft or Gamealot

As much as the Creative Growth Project focuses on high level policy and process Gameloft focuses on the people or should I say innovators in this case and their environment. On one side you could say about the Gameloft setup is that if we create the most “cool” office setup in town everyone will hopefully want to come work here, then we can pick the “cream” of the crop and we will have the competitive advantage, but of course there is no “i” in team so no matter how good the facilities are it is the synergy of the group (blah blah) and how there collective abilities are managed that will prevail. Today I listened to a BBC Radio 4 Extra program called In the Psychiatrist’s Chair where Professor Antony Clare interviewed Spike Milligan, at one part Spike was talking about his mental health issues and he stated that he did his best work when his health was at its worse – this brings the matter of suffering for good art. So can people be happy and still produce novels and not just Mills and Boon and can a team of stars work together…? Then again a large group of talented people that are relaxed could just be the potpourri for an excessive out pouring of creativity – it is also interesting to look at how Gameloft is setup in contrast to how the creatives were portrayed as individuals in the Creative Growth Project animation.

Funding Creativity – Crowdfunding vs Government Funding

Kickstarter crowdfunds for all comers new or old where ever they maybe, whereas Creative NZ is a semi regulated government site really for NZ creators who have a track record and willing and organised to get through the eligibility wall with all its “musts”. Kickstarter is not a charity it is a business platform and with a model that survives on project turnover so with competition from other crowdfunding sites (e.g. Indiegogo) it has streamlined its vetting and changed some reward rules so it almost operates as a hardware shop or even a wholesaler i.e. people basically pre-pay for a bulk amount of items at a discounted price. Between Kickstarter and Creative NZ sits the NZ Arts Foundation Boosted site, with the foundation connection giving it a bit more “creative” credibility, local flavor and support with events and regular workshops such as “The Experiment” (basically a five day urban carnival of the arts).

Organised “creators” should have all 3 of these types of sites firmly in their sights starting with crowdfunding and then onto Creative NZ developing their funding process along the way especially considering there are only so many times you can approach friends and family for money.
